The Daring Female Guide to Ecstatic Living

by Natasha Kogan, Sold to Hyperion Books, for publication in or Winter 2006

The Daring Female Guide is a self-help book with an attitude. It introduces women to a new and unique concept of a Daring Female—a woman who takes risks and lives her life to the fullest and as a result thinks and feels and loves with gusto and guts.  Featuring 30 fun, inspirational, and practical dares, each presented with personal stories and example dares, Daring Female invites – yes, dares – women to get as much as possible out of every aspect of their lives. Initially proposed as a single title, Daring Female is an idea perfectly suited for a series of titles and products.

The author, Natasha Kogan, has lived a very daring life.  She grew up in the former Soviet Union and moved to the US with her family at the age of 14. As a teenager she dared herself to learn to speak English without an accent (mission accomplished), and went on to graduate with highest honors from Wesleyan University, become a consultant with McKinsey & Co and to work for an investment firm in Manhattan.  Natasha and her husband gave themselves an ultra-scary dare and co-founded their own publishing company, Students Helping Students®, a series of books by and for college students now being published by Perigee (see below). Natasha lives in New York City.

LAS VEGAS WEDDINGS: A little History, Lots of Gossip, A Touch of Elvis and a Chapel Guide

by Susan Marg.  Sold to Harpercollins, for publication in late 2004

Las Vegas and Weddings. The two are almost synonymous.  Surprisingly, even though more than 120,000 copies get married there every year and the “business” accounts for nearly a billion dollars in revenue annually, there has been no book devoted to this uniquely American phenomenon.  With the 100th anniversary of Las Vegas to be celebrated in 2005 the timing couldn’t be better for this fun book.

Susan Marg has devoted several years to researching the history and culture of weddings in Vegas and put together a lighthearted, yet authoritatively complete work. Marg has an undergraduate degree in English and a Masters degree in market research. Her interest in pop culture comes from her days in advertising when knowing what was hot and who was in was part of the job. She first visited Las Vegas in 1977 out of curiosity.  On one trip a bride in a long, white wedding gown emerging from a stretch limousine caught her eye, and she began wondering what tales of the altar could be found in the many old-fashioned wedding chapels aligning Las Vegas Boulevard.

Ms. Marg lives in Del Mar, California. with her husband James C. Simmons, a published author with 14 books on travel, history, and biography to his credit.  They did not marry in Las Vegas, but they are planning a renewal of vows ceremony with an Elvis impersonator to celebrate their next anniversary.

Carry Me Home – the debut novel by Sandra Kring (new title to be determined!)

(The first of a two-book deal)

Sold to Bantam Dell Publishing for Winter 2005

Sandra Kring’s debut novel is a tender, laugh-out-loud mainstream story portraying life on the 1940’s homefront.  This terrific, well-paced story is told through the innocent, yet often wise, voice of a simple-minded boy, and depicts a complexity of life, death, war, prejudice, and family ties.

The year 1940 could not be better for Earl “Earwig” Gunderman, a simple-minded teenager growing up in Willowridge, Wisconsin.  But what happens to his family when a beloved older brother, the family hero, is missing in action? The disappearance of Jimmy Gunderman -- Earwig’s protector and the family hero -- in the Pacific during WWII, and the effect on his family in is explored in Carry me Home.  In the course of events Earl learns a lot -- but teaches even more -- about love, sorrow and compassion.

In this first novel -- in fact, the first book the author has ever submitted for publication -- author Sandra Kring has drawn from the areas she knows best: human nature, humor, and the multi-faceted face of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  She is a prodigious talent who has a gift for dialogue, character and pacing and for assuming the role of her protagonist and not letting him go until he is fully realized.  Kring has facilitated support groups and workshops for adult trauma survivors and has published both humor and grief-related articles. She lives in the north woods of Wisconsin and has been consumed by writing for ten years. She has several other stories in the works.
